I first learned about Bittensor in March of 2023 while working as a researcher at Messari. The project piqued my interest, and I continued to follow its progress while exploring other projects building at the intersection of crypto and AI. However, it wasn’t until the Revolution upgrade in October 2023 (which introduced subnets) that I realized Bittensor's potential and got fully sucked in.
I spent my last four months at Messari diving deep into Bittensor. I talked to those building the protocol, subnets, tooling, as well as miners, validators, and investors. The culmination of all those conversations and research resulted in a 5,000+ word report explaining everything about Bittensor. This report quickly became the go-to for anyone looking to understand what Bittensor is. Not to toot my own horn, but I still reckon it's the most thorough resource available, even if a few parts are starting to show their age.
The report is behind a paywall at Messari but can be read for free by creating a Messari Pro account and using the 7-day free trial. While you’re there, you might as well check out the updated piece I put out a few months later, which covers the proposed Dynamic TAO upgrade.
Going forward, I’ll be publishing my Bittensor writings on this Substack for free. Any piece I author or co-author that gets published elsewhere will be aggregated here.
